The East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Planning Committee has, subject to access issues being resolved, approved the development of the disused Arts International Centre just north of Bubwith. The centre has not been used for many years and despite numerous attempts by the owners, could not be sold.The application was for a conversion to accommodate 14 dwellings and 2 offices plus a part conversion of the existing theatre to provide a Rural Enterprise Centre. This in my view was the best compromise and will ensure that the building does not fall into disrepair, adds to the sustainability of Bubwith village and the shops and services it provides.
My fellow Howdenshire Councillor Mrs Engall spoke in support of the application. I then proposed that we as a planning committee supported the application, but asked for a footpath to directly link the development to the village be included, and that the vehicular access should be onto a side road rather than the Howden - York Road, fortunately the majority of the committee members agreed and we have a way forward. It always seemed a strange place to have an arts centre with a theatre. Lets hope it moves ahead speedily as the present financial conditions may hold it up.
I assume the side road you mention is Intake Lane which goes through to the centre of Bubwith. If I recall correctly there isn't a roadside footpath or any lighting so it could be a fun walk home from the hostelry
The plans show it's Intakefield Road? But yes it could be an interesting journey back from the local pub.... a little like the walk back home from the Hope and Anchor in Blacktoft to Faxfleet when I was a little younger!!
A path alongside Intakefield Road may be one of the options?
If your walk was via the river bank no doubt it would have been very interesting, not to say muddy and even wet at times depending on the level of intoxication?
It is good to hear that something is finally going to be done with the place. I was fortunate enough to train there when it was a thriving Artts (sic) centre and have many happy memories of some late night walks back from the white swan down the unlit Intake Road. It is sad that it had to shut down when it did but I learnt a lot when I was there, not always in line with what they taught but it set me on the road to my cuurent career in television.....
